Ventilation
Homes that are extremely energy efficient are also well air sealed. Mechanical ventilation is critical in places, like the bathroom, where odors and moisture are produced. A well-designed, properly ducted exhaust fan in bathrooms and in the kitchen prevents indoor pollutants from accumulating in the home, minimizing the energy loss found in homes that are not well air sealed.
Water Conservation
Low-flow water faucets and dual-flush toilets reduce the amount of cold and hot water used in the home. Consider installing aerating, high-efficiency faucets in the kitchen and bathroom sinks, and a high-efficiency showerhead to reduce energy costs and conserve.
Also, repair dripping faucets and leaky toilets. Dripping faucets can waste about 2,000 gallons of water each year. Leaky toilets can waste as much as 200 gallons each day.
